Fresenius Dialysis Lawyers
GranuFlo and NaturaLyte are additives used in dialysis treatment for patients with renal failure or other kidney problems. Our dialysis attorneys are helping victims and their families who have experienced heart attacks or other cardiac events after dialysis containing GranuFlo or NaturaLyte.
A 2010 study of both chemicals showed they increased the risk of a patient on dialysis suffering a heart attack by 4 to 6 times. Both GranuFlo and NaturaLyte were made and marketed by Fresenius Medical Care, along with being frequently used for treatment at dialysis clinics across the country.
Kidney Dialysis Recall
On March 29, 2012, the FDA issued a Class I recall of GranuFlo and NaturaLyte. The recall states that users may be in danger of serious health risks or death. Fresenius knew about the increased risk of cardiac events and death associated with GranuFlo since at least 2010. The FDA was alerted to the concerns over dangerous side effects when an internal Fresenius memo from November of 2011 was leaked. This Fresenius memo contained warnings to their own clinics about the dangerous side effects of GranuFlo and NaturaLyte. The FDA has released a statement concerning these dangerous side effects and the Class I recall:
“The manufacturer is cautioning clinicians to be aware of the concentration of acetate or sodium diacetate (acetic acid plus acetate) contained in Fresenius’ NaturaLyte Liquid and GranuFlo Dry Acid Concentrate. Inappropriate prescription of these products can lead to a high serum bicarbonate level in patients undergoing hemodialysis. This may contribute to metabolic alkalosis, which is a significant risk factor associated with low blood pressure, hypokalemia, hypoxemia, hypercapnia and cardiac arrhythmia, which, if not appropriately treated, may culminate in cardiopulmonary arrest. This product may cause serious adverse health consequences, including death.”
